Example 7: Showing Only Full-Service Facilities with EDs

In the iPhone app on the left, 2 animal hospitals (circled) are listed as potential nearby EDs. Furthermore, the other listings of nearby ERs give doctor names instead of facility names, and all doctors listed appear to all be located at or affiliated with the closest nearby hospital. In the iPhone app on the right, the second listing is a duplicate of the third listing, with the exact same physical address given:


To avoid such problems, EMNet researchers spend several months each year compiling what we believe is the most accurate national database of EDs. In addition to comparing major national hospital databases, we place thousands of phone calls to facilities to determine more information about their EDs (e.g., we called more than 1600 facilities for in the creation of the 2009 NEDI-USA database). To be included in our database, EDs also must meet specific criteria (e.g., be open at least 156 of 168 hours per week) The “emergency rooms” circled on the left example above were excluded because they only handle animal emergencies. The ED circled on the right was excluded because, while it is listed on the web as a separate hospital, further research on the hospital website reveals that the hospital’s emergency department is actually located in the same place as the 3rd emergency department listed on that list, with the same ED phone number listed on both facility websites (i.e., there is one ED with a pediatric and adult area). In an emergency situation, we are confident that smart-phone users would not want to deal with these problems. EMNet findERnow already has addressed them.
